The German automaker said it would locate the production of the vehicle “main segment” at its plant near Tuscalus until 2027. Officials refused to reveal details of the vehicle, but the plant mainly produces Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
“We are also approaching the US client, locating a major segment model in Tuscaloosa, strengthening our North America market connections, where a number of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including GLS and GLS, said in a message.
A spokesman for Mercedes-Benz declined to comment on whether the new vehicle in Alabama was the result of Trump’s tariffs, citing a “local strategy for the production of vehicles where they sell them.
The carmaker said the Alabama plant had established itself as the “Mercedes-Benz Global Exports Center for SUV exports”. The company said that approximately 60% of SUVs assembled at the plant are exported.
The message comes against the background of Trump’s 25% car ranks of imported vehicles as well as additional taxes on 25% of car parts which must come into force until Saturday.
