The campaigns that wanted the FA to ban transgender women of the women’s game protested before the male party of England against the Republic of Ireland in Wembley in November.
It was triggered by the ban on a teenager by observations made to a transgender rival in a grassroots match.
However, the updated FA transport policy allows biological men to continue participating in women’s game how reduced testosterone levels are fulfilled and passing “observation” to assess whether they have a risk to the safety of other players and fair competition.
Transgender women players should provide proof that they have been below the testosterone limit for at least 12 months, as well as a medical hormonal medical record and an annual treatment of treatment.
However, a new formal process – which will involve a parties’ observation by a FA official – will give the body the ability to eliminate or reject a player’s permission to play in the women’s game.
Earlier this month, FA said that its updated process will give the governing body “definitive discretion” on eligibility and that it will be managed in a case “for a case”.
The FA says there are 20 transgender women registered to play amateur football in England among the millions playing at that level and there is none in the professional game in native nations.
In December 2023, a group of 48 MPs signed a letter that urged the Football Association to change its rules on transgender inclusion to “protect women and girls” in football.
This arose after several teams retired from the games against a recreational side in Yorkshire after a shot from a transgender player injured a rival.
Sutton United Women’s Team postponed a match against Ebbsfleet United in September 2024 through an “abundance of caution”. He came after Sutton signed Blair Hamilton, a transgender goalkeeper.
The club made history in January 2024 naming Lucy Clark, the first openly transgender manager in British football.
In March, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said the governing body was looking to “perfect” its transgender policy, but its current rules were “at the right place.”
